DMCA & Copyright Policy

Last revised: October 2026 • Mai Read (https://mairead.tech)

1. Local-First Document Reader Architecture 100% Private • Client-Side

Mai Read is fundamentally an open-source, client-side document reading utility. When users open PDF or DOCX files from their computers, all file parsing, rendering, text search, highlighters, and study notes are executed exclusively inside the user's browser memory (client-side) using standard WebAssembly and JavaScript engines (Mozilla PDF.js, Mammoth.js).

Zero Server Storage:

  • Mai Read does not operate cloud storage, document databases, or remote file repositories for user documents.
  • User files are never uploaded, transmitted, copied, or stored on our servers.
  • Mai Read does not possess, monitor, or control the private files a user chooses to view on their personal hardware.

2. Public Domain & Open Access Collections Verified Legal

The curated reading shelf on Mai Read references only verified legal public domain literature and open-access academic works:

  • Project Gutenberg Classics: Works whose copyright protection has expired worldwide under US and international copyright laws (such as Frankenstein, Dracula, The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes, and The Great Gatsby).
  • Historical Golden Age Comics (1930s–1940s): Historical comic periodicals indexed by the Internet Archive whose copyright registrations were never renewed under the provisions of the 1909 US Copyright Act, placing them permanently into the public domain.
  • Open-Access Scholarly Papers: Research preprints and academic publications indexed via arXiv (Cornell University) and OpenAlex, distributed openly under author-granted Creative Commons or open-access repository licenses.

3. External Search Engine & Indexing Notice Outbound Index

Mai Read provides an informational search indexing gateway for external third-party digital catalogs, including MangaDex, Google Books, and Open Library.

Strict Search Engine Boundary:

  • We are an index, not a host: When users search for titles across external open archives, Mai Read acts strictly as an external search engine. Search results display metadata and thumbnail previews provided by the third-party's public search API.
  • Direct Outbound Navigation: Selecting an external title routes the user directly to the upstream third-party platform (such as mangadex.org, books.google.com, or openlibrary.org) in a new browser tab.
  • No Content Hosting or Proxying: Mai Read does not host, stream, scrape, cache, or distribute chapters, pages, or files from external commercial publishers or third-party web platforms. Mai Read server proxies are strictly restricted from relaying third-party media.

4. Digital Millennium Copyright Act (DMCA) Notice

Mai Read respects the intellectual property rights of others and complies with the requirements of the Digital Millennium Copyright Act (Title 17, United States Code, Section 512) and equivalent international copyright directives.

If you are a copyright owner or an authorized agent and believe that any search index link, curated metadata listing, or reference on Mai Read infringes upon your copyright, you may submit a formal notification of claimed infringement pursuant to 17 U.S.C. § 512(c)(3).

5. Universal Right to Education & Open Knowledge Human Right • Article 26 UDHR

Education is a fundamental human right, not a luxury privilege. Mai Read was conceived and engineered under the moral foundation of Article 26 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR), which establishes that access to technical, professional, and higher education must be equally accessible to all on the basis of merit.

Our Educational Mission & Purpose:

  • Democratizing Human Knowledge: We believe financial status, geography, and technological gatekeeping should never bar a person from reading world literature, historical documents, scientific discoveries, or philosophy.
  • Preserving Public Domain Heritage: Humanity's cultural and intellectual inheritance belongs collectively to all people. Our open library indexes verified public domain treasures to ensure historic works remain permanently discoverable and readable by future generations without proprietary paywalls.
  • Empowering Students & Researchers Everywhere: Students in remote or low-income regions frequently face severe barriers: expensive digital reader subscriptions, continuous data usage fees, and predatory telemetry. Mai Read removes these barriers by operating 100% free, client-side, and offline-ready.

6. What Makes Us A Better Option — The Ethical Reader Charter Student • Privacy First

Most commercial document readers and e-book platforms are built to harvest user data, lock features behind monthly subscription paywalls, and display intrusive advertisements. Mai Read takes the opposite path: a reader engineered solely to honor human attention, student privacy, and unhindered learning.

100% Client-Side Privacy

Commercial Readers: Upload your documents to cloud servers, track page dwell times, monitor reading speed, and log every search query.
Mai Read: Zero server uploads. Zero accounts. Zero telemetry. Your private study files, notes, and highlights remain strictly on your personal device.

Zero Paywalls, Zero Ads

Commercial Readers: Gate essential tools like multi-color highlighters, study binders, text search, or PDF exports behind $10–$20/mo subscriptions.
Mai Read: 100% free for everyone, forever. Zero banner ads, zero paywalls, zero sponsored microtransactions.

Offline Resilience for All

Commercial Readers: Require continuous DRM server pinging and break down without high-speed internet connections.
Mai Read: Full Progressive Web App (PWA) with Service Worker caching. Operates completely offline in low-connectivity classrooms, commutes, and flights.

Cognitive Focus & Inclusion

Commercial Readers: Overwhelm readers with gamified popups, social feeds, and recommendation algorithms competing for dopamine.
Mai Read: Calm warm-paper aesthetics, ADHD/dyslexia-friendly reading rulers, independent paper dimming, and zero distracting notifications.

Safe Search by Default

Commercial Search: Exposes students to unmoderated adult popups, ad networks, and explicit media without safeguard toggles.
Mai Read: Enforces multi-tier SafeSearch by default, keeping public archives wholesome and suitable for school, university, and family use.

Open Standards, No Lock-In

Commercial Readers: Enclose user highlights and annotations in proprietary closed silos that cannot be exported.
Mai Read: Native support for standard PDF and DOCX documents with direct export of your study notes and highlights.

7. Educational Fair Use & Non-Commercial Research

Mai Read operates strictly within the non-commercial educational fair use provisions recognized under 17 U.S.C. § 107 (United States Copyright Act) and international copyright treaties.

The reading, search indexing, highlighting, and scratchpad tools provided by Mai Read are intended solely for personal study, private research, scholarship, criticism, teaching, and education. Mai Read derives no commercial subscription revenue, displays no advertisements, and sells no user data.

8. Disclaimer of Warranties & Limitation of Liability

Mai Read and its services are provided on an "as is" and "as available" basis without warranties of any kind, either express or implied. Mai Read makes no representation or warranty regarding the completeness, accuracy, or legal status of documents loaded into the local reader by end users or hosted on external third-party services linked through our search index.
